The scarves and shawls produced at the factory in Pavlovo Posad are some of the brightest and most beautiful manifestations of Russian culture. As time goes on and society moves forward, so do people’s tastes and fashion. Pavlovo Posad shawls and scarves however, have proven timeless and are part of a tradition and fashion that does not seem to go out of style. In Russia these scarves hold a special place in people’s hearts and are worn year-round and can even be recognised abroad. These scarves, made in the old town of Pavlovsky Posad, represent a national understanding of what beauty really is, and a woman’s desire to be a truly unique and bright Russian beauty. The Pavlovo Posad Shawl Factory is unlike any other: There they not only continue to use centuries-old technology, but have also kept open the local school where new, original shawl designs are made. The production facility itself is also located inside historic walls. RTG TV host Irina Pudova travelled to the small city outside of Moscow to see the fascinating shawl-making process with her own eyes. When being manufactured, each scarf and shawl is worked on and inspected by twenty experienced workers, however no Russian college or university offers programmes or courses to train those interested in studying this traditional craft and how to print, make templates and dye the scarves. The tricks and secrets of this unique craft are passed down from generation to generation – from father to son. Perhaps this close familial connection is the reason why the shawls and scarves made at the Pavlovo Posad factory keep those that wear them warm no matter how harsh the frost.
