It took us two hours by helicopter to get from the capital of the Yamalo-Nenets Autonomous Okrug Salekhard to the Lake Varchato. It's famous for its unusual inhabitants - real lake predators perches and pikes. Since they don't have any enemies there, the perches' may have up to 5 kilogrammes in weight, and some pipe may be quite taken for a little sharp half a meter long and 45 kilogrammes in weight. Moreover, it has teeth no smaller than pike's ones. But there's a wonderful custom in Varchato. Even 10-kilogramme pike is set free to get a potbelly further. No doubt fishing luck smiled upon us and we have caught perches and a pike was prisoned in a honour duel. According to the tradition we let it go. Fat perches would be enough for a fisherman's ukha*. We will be telling about Yamal pikes in the company of friends long after our return from the fishing in this lake with such a wonderful name Varchato. And every time we will pull hands apart more and more widely like real fishermen to show size of the lake predator. Believe it or not! *Ukha is a clear Russian soup, made of fish.
