The trademark of the Karelian Isthmus and one of its most well-known symbols (even by law) is the Vuoksi River. One of the oldest cities in Russia is located on the shore of the Vuoksi River. Over its long existence this city has been known by many names. It was once called Käkisalmi, which in Karelo-Finnish means “The Cuckoo’s Straight,” however when Swedes captured these lands, they changed the name to Kexholm, or “Cuckoo Island.” It was in the mid-20th century that the city received the name which it still holds today — Priozersk. RTG TV host Alexander Uvarov visited Priozersk where he got to check out the city’s historic Korela Fortress and other fascinating sights which Leningrad Oblast’s Karelian Isthmus has to offer.
