Parts of the Western Siberian Lowland are some of the swampiest areas in Russia. The swamps go on for many kilometres and make up approximately 70 percent of the territory. Not long ago it was possible to get around them with the help of a helicopter. Cossack ataman Yermak Timofeyevich, who led the Russian forces in the conquest of Siberia, was forced to use a different means. He and his men travelled by strug, a type of wooden Russian sailboat. Now Siberians have it a bit easier when it comes to navigating the territory. They developed a vehicle that can travel on dry land, through swamps, deep snow and in the water: The Petrovich – their own type of Humvee. Driving the machine is an experience in itself, but it’s even more interesting when there is a concrete goal to the expedition. RTG TV host Igor Vukolov travelled in a Petrovich to the protected Laima River where you can find fish even in the oppressive June heat.
