St.Petersburg's churches of military glory

As the once capital of the Russian Empire, St. Petersburg was at the centre of many incredible events and military victories for many centuries. It was here that the Imperial Guard was headquartered and that the Russian navy originated. Long ago military victories were marked not only by parades, fireworks and loud celebration, but also with the city erecting great triumphal arches, monuments, obelisks and even churches. These cathedrals, churches and chapels constructed to mark victories won on both land and water were built in honour of the saint on whose name day the military victory was won. Unfortunately not all of these churches remain today. Those that still stand however, are breathtaking in both their beauty and greatness. RTG TV host Vladimir Kolganov familiarised himself with Imperial St. Petersburg’s military history and took an in-depth look at the architectural adornment of three of the city’s oldest churches built to mark the city’s military glory — the St. Nicholas Naval Cathedral, the Church of the Transfiguration and the Church of the Holy Life-Giving Trinity.
