The world record for tank production was made in the Urals. Since 1941, about 100,000 armoured vehicles have been produced in the city of Nizhny Tagil. Every third tank used in battles during World War I was made at the Ural railroad car plant. In only two months, the factory, which was designed to manufacture non-war vehicles, was transformed into a gigantic defence complex. Twelve manufacturing plants from western regions of Russia were moved to Nizhny Tagil in a matter of weeks, turning the Ural city into a true tank metropolis. The Uralvagonzavod (Ural Railroad car Factory) was home to the world's first and only tank assembly line. During World War I, the factory produced one of the legendary T-34 tanks every hour. The world-famous tanks – from the first Soviet designs to the latest generation of combat vehicles – can be seen at the Museum of Armoured Vehicles in Nizhny Tagil. Still today the Ural Railroad car Factory holds the leading position in the production of defence equipment in Russia.
