Altai, the general name for the territory located in the southern part of Siberia, shares a border with Kazakhstan, China and Mongolia. This place is most famous for the Altai Mountains, the highest mountain range in Siberia. The Katun River is the largest river found in the Altai Mountains and the area’s main waterway. It can be translated from ancient Turkic to mean “ lady, woman, mother.” Despite the Katun River’s high number of tributaries, not one of them is a mountain stream. Chuysky Trakt (also known as the Chuya Highway), Altai’s main motorway and one of the most beautiful roads in Russia, runs along the Katun River. Construction on this mountain road began in the middle of the 19th century when Russian merchants began trading with people who lived in the mountains. Today this road is a State Highway and it runs all the way to Russia’s border with Mongolia. While driving along this road one can see breathtaking mountain passes, picturesque valleys and spacious steppes located high in the mountains. The secrets of Korgon Ridge, the healing capabilities of the Belokurikh health resort, the wind patterns at Teletskoe Lake, as well as the most interesting natural monuments found in the Altai Mountains are all part of RTG TV’s new program.
