Polistovsky State Nature Reserve

The State Polistovsky Nature Reserve, located in north-west Russia in Pskov Oblast, is quite a unique area. Part of it is covered by forests and fields, but the majority — 80 percent — can be classified as a raised bog. Despite their gloomy stereotype, bogs can be very beneficial and play an important role in the ecology of the planet. The swamp is a powerful climate regulator and its soil filters out harmful substances, helping bogs to “supply” clean water to local lakes and rivers. Host Igor Maximenko visited the Polistovsky Nature Reserve where he tasted swamp water, found out what carnivorous plants eat, how fast moss grows and where it’s safe to step without the worry of sinking in.
