In the beginning of the 19th century fields of the most beautiful precious stones were founded in the vicinity of Kolyvan, they were porphyry, jasper and quartzite. Soon the Kolyvan grinding factory and later stone cutting factory were established. The factory was an enterprise owned by the court and they worked only on those items ordered by from the capital. Vases were created according to sketches of the best architects and artists: Andrey Voronikhin, Charles Cameron, Giacomo Quarenghi. 900 items were produced from the day of opening, including famous «Empress of Vases», a huge oval bowl made of Revnev jasper, which is kept in the State Hermitage collection. Production of Kolyvan stone cutting factory is found not only within Russia, but state museums and private collections in Japan, Sweden, France and the United Kingdom.
